User Interaction Onderweg in Nederland (ODiN)

Tijdens mijn afstudeeropdracht bij het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) heb ik gewerkt aan het verbeteren van de gebruiksvriendelijkheid en interface van de ODiN-applicatie (Onderweg in Nederland applicatie) voor dataverzameling. Een belangrijk onderzoek voor informatiebehoefte en beleidsvorming. De focus lag op het optimaliseren van de gebruikerservaring door het proces te automatiseren en de motivatie van gebruikers te verhogen met elementen zoals gamification en personalisatie.

Gedurende het project heb ik wireframes en een interactief prototype ontwikkeld in Figma, gebaseerd op inzichten uit literatuuronderzoek en veldwerk. Deze ontwerpen zijn getest en aangescherpt om de toepasbaarheid in een praktijkomgeving te waarborgen. Mijn rol omvatte niet alleen het ontwerpen en testen van de oplossing, maar ook het vertalen van complexe gebruikersbehoeften naar praktische en schaalbare verbeteringen.

Aan het einde van de opdracht zijn concrete aanbevelingen geformuleerd, niet alleen gericht op implementatie, maar ook om kritisch te reflecteren op de rol van de applicatie als innovatief hulpmiddel in dataverzameling.

During my graduation internship at Nxtlvl, I focused on improving the user engagement and booking experience for Kembe Tanzania, a platform offering safari trips to Tanzania. The current booking process relies on form submissions and provides limited information to guide users, making it challenging for users—especially first-time safari travelers—to confidently plan their trips. This can make the process often feels static, impersonal, challeging to navigate and lacking in support.

This project aims to address these challenges by incorporating storytelling elements and interactive features that immerse users in Tanzania’s wildlife and culture. By improving the clarity of the booking process and offering better guidance, the platform will help users confidently navigate their options and create their ideal safari experience.

User Interaction Spark Energy Management System

During my graduation internship at Stormin, I developed Spark, an energy management system designed to help homes and businesses use energy more efficiently.

By connecting home batteries and solar panels, Spark controls the distribution of energy, deciding whether it is used to lower energy costs or if the excess is sold to the electricity network operator. My role focused on designing the interaction between the system and its users, ensuring it was both straightforward and engaging. In order to increase user involvement and offer a more meaningful experience, I also looked into gamification and other functionalities.

Besides the user interface, I focused on implementing functionality such as energy consumption tracking, adjustable energy modes, and notifications to keep consumers informed and in control. This project integrated user research, user testing and design to create a platform that encourages sustainability and lowers energy costs for users.

Infrastructure Version Management Dashboard for AWS Services

This innovative solution includes a custom dashboard that provides iO with enhanced visibility into their extensive AWS landscape, offering detailed insights into various resources and their version information.

A key feature of the project was the integration of end-of-life (EOL) data from trusted sources, consolidating this critical information with the resource inventory. The resulting comprehensive database enables iO to efficiently manage version control and plan for necessary upgrades across their entire AWS infrastructure.

User Interaction Onderzoek Kotlin Multiplatform

Tijdens mijn afstudeerstage bij Apperium heb ik onderzocht hoe Kotlin Multiplatform kan worden toegepast in de ontwikkeling van cross-platform applicaties voor Android en iOS. Mijn focus lag op het analyseren van de mogelijkheden van Kotlin Multiplatform voor het delen van businesslogica tussen verschillende platforms, terwijl de platform-specifieke gebruikersinterfaces behouden blijven.

Het doel van mijn project was om te onderzoeken of Kotlin Multiplatform een geschikte oplossing biedt voor Apperium’s ontwikkelproces en om de voordelen en uitdagingen van deze technologie in de praktijk te ervaren en weer te geven. Hierbij heb ik gewerkt aan het migreren van een bepaalde functionaliteiten uit een bestaande app van Apperium naar Kotlin Multiplatform, wat me in staat stelde om praktische ervaring op te doen en inzicht te krijgen in de effectiviteit van het framework.

Door dit onderzoek heb ik waardevolle informatie verzameld over de toepasbaarheid van Kotlin Multiplatform, met als resultaat een conclusie over de geschiktheid voor toekomstige projecten binnen Apperium.

BDO is een grote organisatie met honderden verschillende dashboards in omloop, maar al deze dashboards missen wat extra begeleiding waardoor gebruikers niet altijd de volledige potentie van de statistieken herkennen.

Om dit op te lossen heb ik een betere data storytelling en AI-functionaliteiten geimplementeerd in hun dashboards. Data storytelling betekent het vertellen van een lopend verhaal in een dashboard. Het trekt direct de aandacht van de gebruiker aan met pakkende titels, maakt gebruik van een heldere UI/UX design en zorgt dat de grafieken altijd aansluiten bij het verhaal. Data storytelling moet er uiteindelijk voor zorgen dat alle gebruikers van een dashboard, dezelfde inzichten eruit halen.

Met AI-gegenereerde verklaringen kunnen BDO-medewerkers tijdens klantafspraken snel de belangrijkste inzichten presenteren en uitleg geven over de oorzaken van bepaalde dataveranderingen. Deze verklaringen worden volledig gegenereerd binnen het Microsoft Power Platform en weergegeven in een Power App, waar ze indien nodig nog kunnen worden bewerkt.

Software Fesma Tool

During my graduation internship at Fesma, a consultancy firm, I worked on enhancing their employee application for time tracking and invoicing. The project involved designing and implementing a cross-functional solution to address the challenges of billing accuracy, scalability, and security. I integrated Identity Access Management (IAM) to enable secure role-based access, evaluating options such as Keycloak and AWS IAM to ensure seamless compatibility with Flutter and Java.

To support the application’s growth, I researched database systems by analysing the performance of relational and non-relational databases like PostgreSQL and MongoDB, ultimately tailoring the system for high-performance read/write operations, mimicking a real-time database service.

Focusing on automation, I designed an invoicing system that adheres to legal and compliance standards across different countries, reducing manual effort and enhancing accuracy. This integrated approach significantly improved Fesma’s operational workflows, laying a foundation for future scalability and positioning the company to better meet client needs.

The main product of my internship is the Cyber Security Risk Assessment Model. The scope of this model is 3rd parties the reason for this is, because of the new NIS2 directive which requires Jumbo to also have their 3rd party risk management in order. So the research that I've done during my internship covers: NIS2, Cyber security risk models, Cyber security frameworks, etc. Next to my research and creating the main product I've also thought of something which is more usable than just a cyber risk model. I've also managed to take really good steps in my soft skills and personal development. Next to my research that I’ve done on literature's I also did a lot of interviews and of course because of interviewing all these people my communication skills have gotten much better. Stakeholder engagement was something to consider as well during my internship, I needed to effectively contact stakeholders to make sure I got engagement and of course I needed to be able to tell my story and present accordingly.

My graduation internship took place at SUE, where I got a research problem from the R&D department. The goal is to figure out how to manage virtual machines from a Kubernetes cluster, where the standard kubernetes workflow is disrupted as little as possible. There are several aspects to this problem; Orchestration, for managing the lifecycle of the VMs. Networking, for communication between the cluster and the VMs. As well as storage management, secret management and monitoring.
Throughout the internship I started questioning whether or not managing VMs from Kubernetes is desirable, independent of whether it is possible or not. So I have two goals, figuring out the possibility and desirability of managing virtual machines using Kubernetes.

Software Actemium - Artificial Intelligence in productieprocessen.

Tijdens mijn afstudeerstage heb ik bij Actemium Veghel onderzocht hoe Artificial Intelligence gebruikt kan worden in een productieproces om zo energie te besparen tijdens het produceren, en ook zodat er betere kwaliteit producten geproduceerd kunnen worden. Het gaat hier om het produceren van bouwmaterialen. Deze moeten voldoen aan bepaalde kwaliteitseisen. Momenteel wordt de kwaliteit van het product gemonitord door de operators die gebruik maken van een Manufacturing Execution Software. De problemen die hierbij naar boven komen is onder andere dat een operator pas weet dat er buiten specificatie geproduceerd wordt wanneer dit al het geval is.

Het doel van deze opdracht is dan ook het onderzoeken en ontwikkelen van een proof of concept model wat aan kan tonen wat de toegevoegde waarde is van AI binnen een productieproces, maar ook de basis kan leggen voor toekomstige AI-opdrachten binnen Actemium.

Currently, the only way to validate YAML pipelines is to commit and test them directly in the Azure DevOps CI/CD environment, a process that slows down the development workflow.
The goal of the project is to provide a rich developer experience, by making the pipeline building process feel more interactive, and safe. The tool will integrate with your development environment, supercharging it with diagnostics, suggestions and documentation.

Performation is een bedrijf dat zich richt op het verbeteren van processen in de zorg doormiddel van data analyse en softwareoplossingen. Hun tools worden gebruikt door verschillende lagen binnen een ziekenhuis voor processen zoals capaciteitsplanning en begrotingen te versimpelen en optimaliseren. Het leveren van betrouwbare en stabiele software speelt daarbij een belangrijke rol.

Tijdens mijn afstudeerstage richt ik me op het verbeteren van de softwarekwaliteit door geautomatiseerde front-end tests te implementeren binnen hun applicatie. Na geschikte front-end testing frameworks te onderzoeken heb ik er gekozen die goed aansluit op hun front-end geschreven in Vue.js. Hiermee ontwikkel ik een teststrategie waarmee bestaande functionaliteiten makkelijk getest kunnen worden en geef ik het team de handvaten om deze gemakkelijk bij te werken bij nieuwe functionaliteiten.
